Number 1s & Number 2s
This week...
What’s new in the world of toilet training? Not as much as you’d think, actually. Most behavior analysts will be familiar with the original Foxx and Azrin rapid training model, from 1973. The #dobetter podcast has a fantastic episode exploring the pros, cons, and ethical implications of using this method 50-ish years on.
Be sure to check out the show notes, which provide a comprehensive list of resources and literature in a Google doc. This includes the BoysTown website, where you will find several (entertaining to read) toilet training resources. They even have a newsletter! I signed up immediately - and this is a great one for parents.
The #dobetter podcast also covered toilet training in their difficult discussions series, with some good points to take into account. I like this brief overview of the startle method, which is frequently used in place of a punishment component. With these helpful resources, I think today’s mindful practitioners can use the principles of behavior to teach toilet training in a dignified, learner-first approach. You can even involve Daniel Tiger.
Conference corner! Check out the 6th Annual Leadership Summit - Building a Better ABA Business. Or maybe you want to attend the International Conference on Applied Behavior Analysis in the Philippines! But you will definitely want to be in Galway, Ireland for the Standard Celeration Society’s first International Conference - see call for papers here.
Finally, a great list of top 10 book recommendations for newly certified BCBAs/behavior analysts (or long ago certified behavior analysts, no judgement).
